I can't speak for all elders. But I do know that my father is rabid about the internet. He refuses to have a computer and takes every opportunity to preach to me about the internet and it's dangers.

XJW Nancy Denison's Story In Recent Newspaper
by MadApostate in'i have never saluted the flag, and i am 63 years old'.
a former jehovah's witness has lingering effects from a faith that does not allow followers to pledge allegiance to a country, vote or serve in the military.

Thanks for posting this story. It is interesting to me the long-term affects this religion has on people.
And I have to agree that just because a person joins a religion does not make them a puppet. I think religion just works for some people. Who are we to judge them if it enriches their lives.
Whatever makes a person happy and makes them a better person is OK with me. Just because religion doesn't work for me, doesn't make another person less because it does for them.

First Post Musings
by Perry inthis is my first post and i must say that i have been lurking here from time to time and have been impressed with the content.
back in college i visited the old h2o site many times and this is definitely superior.
thanks to all for the rich content i've been enjoying.. my great mother was a witness making me a fourth generation.

Welcome to the board Perry!! What an eloquent first post. Something you said really struck a chord with me. You mentioned not knowing how people could live within the tenants the religion sets out! I completely relate to that. I don't know how I survived, even though I "chose" to be where I was. I feel like at the ripe old age of forty-two, I am just beginning to live. Better late than never.

I always say the key to true happiness as an adult is to play with our toys.
Last year on our first Christmas together and my first ever Thinker bought me the talking and moving Eyeore. I still play with him. You go Ben.

A New Guy from Chicago with a Story to Tell
by Reborn2002 infirst of all id like to say hello to everyone on this website, and to thank and acknowledge each and every one of you for your individuality, personal experience, and in some cases, commitment to truth.. having read some of the heartfelt topics and posts here have served to be a great encouragement to me, more than some could imagine.
my name is jason, and i am a recovering ex-jw.. i guess this would be an ideal time to tell my life story as an abbreviated version, so here goes.. i was "born into, or raised" in the organization.
my grandfather was an elder for 45 years, and served as one of the very first jw in the south chicagoland suburbs.

Comf,
Yes I do fit your profile description pretty much to a tee!! I'll convey your congratulations to Thinker.
PS. I think Reborn is probably telling the truth. Fits in with a lot of Bull Shit they put me through when my ex left me. They are pretty much certifiable.
Reborn,
I do have to disagree with you on one thing. In my congregation it seemed to be the women who got the shaft, not the men. JW men just cannot stand strong intelligent women. Especially women who know the rules and call them on their mistakes!
Speaking from experience. They were gunning for me for a very long time.

Divorce? Help please.
by Mulan inwe have a close relative who has left her jw husband.
he is extremely controlling, and emotionally abusive.
their children are grown.

Mulan,
I went through a very similiar situation to your relative. The one big difference is that he left me. But the elders still blamed me.
Although my counselor had never met my ex she labeled him as a non-alcoholic alcoholic, meaning he displayed all the characteristics without actually imbibing.
One book that helped me tremendously to break free emotionally from the situation was Co-Dependent No More. Don't know the author, leant the book out and haven't gotten it back yet. But it is excellent in helping a person identify the problems and then break free from the cycle. My email is open and if your relative so wishes I would be glad to email her privately. Sometimes someone sharing that had a similiar situation is a big help!
Good luck to her!

Patio,
It wasn't anything like Eyes Wide Shut was it? That was such a weird movie, and when I saw this new one it made me think it could be like that. Albiet, I love Tom Cruise.
It might be worth a shot, if you say so.
